Alcatel-Lucent Buys Riverstone Networks for $207 Million

In the year of 2006, Riverstone's partner Lucent
Technologies signed an Asset Purchase agreement to acquire
Riverstone Networks. Also in 2006, Lucent Technologies won
the auction for Riverstone Networks for $207 million. Later
in the year of 2006, Lucent Technologies merged with
Alcatel.
All of Riverstone Networks was geared towards IP over
Ethernet, often for a Metro Ethernet solution. All the
products were multilayer switches (or switch-routers) and
specialized in MPLS VPNs.
Used Riverstone RS 38000 Router
The
Pre-Owned RS 38000 is Riverstone's high density metro
aggregation router. It is an established leader among
metro-focused high-density routers, combining powerful service
creation tools, dynamic bandwidth provisioning, and a
connection-oriented data collection architecture. The 38000 can
aggregate or deliver these services over a complete range of
optical and legacy network interfaces, including GbE,
MPLS-enabled GbE, Fast Ethernet, CWDM, Channelized DS3, Packet
over SONET/SDH OC48c, MPLS-enabled Packet over SONET/SDH
OC48c/OC12c/OC3c and ATM E3/DS3/OC3c/OC12c interface.
The Used Riverstone 38000 is ideally suited to serve as an MPLS
Label Edge Router (LER) or Label Switch Router (LSR), and sits

nationwide ATM or MPLS backbone. The Refurbished Riverstone
38000 is NEBS compliant and features fully redundant processors,
switch fabrics, and power supplies, along with a standards-based
implementation of the Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP).

Used Riverstone 15000 Family
The 15000 Family (referred to as the 15K)
differed from the RS family. The 15K is not flow-based.
Flow-based routers use the main CPU to process new flows and
packets through the switch. The 15K differed by letting the line
card processors do the work for the network traffic, leaving the
main CPU to work on the system itself. This type of network
processing is similar to Cisco's dCEF.
The 15K products were based on a different operating system than
other Riverstone products, called ROS-X. It was designed
to be modular and more like the common command line interface of
Cisco.
Used Riverstone 15008
The highest performance product from
Riverstone. It supported a 96 port 10/100 Ethernet card, 12
or 24 port 1GB Ethernet cards and 1 or 2 port 10GB Ethernet
cards. Support for ATM and PoS was planned.
Used Riverstone 15100 / 15200
Designed with the same architecture and
operating system as the 15008, the 15100 and 15200 were
designed more for an access/distribution network role. They
were semi-modular in design with some fixed 1G Ethernet
ports and GBIC uplinks for either 1GB or 10GB.
Used Riverstone RS Family
The RS family of products were flow-based
multilayer switches. They ran ROS software, which had a command
line interface but could also be configured via SNMP.

configuration
3x00 - Semi-modular in design, came with 32 fixed
100BaseT Ethernet ports and 2 modular bays 8x00 -
Fully modular hardware, came in either 8 slot (8000) or 16
slot (8600) versions. The modules for the 8x00 included
Control Modules, 100BaseT Ethernet, 1000BaseT Ethernet,
1000BaseX Gigabit Ethernet with interchangeable GBICs,
including PoS, ATM, Serial, T1/E1, and T3/E3. 38000
- Fully modular hardware, differed from the rest of the RS
range physically due to the modular slots being vertical.
Used Riverstone RS 1000/3000
The
Used Riverstone RS 1000/ RS 3000 are Riverstone's metro access
routers. Among the most highly deployed access platforms in the
metro, they extend IP service delivery to the metro access edge,
featuring Riverstone's metro-optimized MPLS services, full
function routing and switching, and dynamic bandwidth
provisioning with a connection-oriented data collection
architecture. At the same time, the 1000/3000's combination of a
compact form factor and high port density saves operational
costs and improves service provider margins.
The key to the platform's popularity is its unique ability to
deliver Layer 3/2 services to the access edge over either
existing TDM or ATM networks or available dark fiber. Service
providers have deployed the RS 1000 or 3000 to extend the reach
